My Students

The children in my class are creators and artists. They marvel at the world and try to figure out how things work. They are curious 5 and 6 year olds who want to know the "whys" and "hows" of the world around them. They love to sew and want to create bigger projects to share their learning.

My students are a diverse group of learners speaking many languages and coming from an array of backgrounds.

They are curious and engaged learners, hungry to discover the magic of the world around them. Creativity, art, and imagination are highly valued in my school and classroom. It is particularly important to me to create an environment where students feel encouraged to try out new ideas using their imagination and artistic skills. Children learn best by doing. My students love to design, create, and make things, and are becoming amazing artists in the process. This year my students have become especially interested in the fiber arts. They have learned to hand sew and finger knit. Learning the alphabet, numbers, and about the world around them through a medium such as textile arts will help my students stretch their minds to the many different types of things that are possible, not only in our classroom, but out in the wider world.

My Project

The students in my class love to create! They spend time each day learning about different things in a multi-sensory way through a guided choice time. During this time, students are supported to try new things (e.g. making letters from clay, acting out addition and subtraction problems, practicing their fine motor skills through sewing and drawing). One of the areas that has been incredibly successful in helping students to increase their fine motor skills, focus, and to create shared learning opportunities has been our sewing station. In order to continue their learning and help them to further stretch their artistic ability, they need additional materials such as sewing machines, sewing scissors, and sewing guides. Using these materials, students will be able to measure the proportions of the animals they are learning about, and then sew them. They will be able to create a class quilt and other artistic projects that represent their learning throughout kindergarten.

By receiving the materials I am requesting, students in my classroom will have the freedom to create new and exciting fiber arts projects.

By providing opportunities for students to use their imagination and creativity with their peers, they become more open as learners, they are more likely to engage in challenging work with a positive attitude and will ultimately contribute to their communities with insightful, creative problem solving skills.
