Try to remember the last time that you sat perfectly still while working or reading, or even watching TV. Right now as I type my left foot is moving to the rhythm of the keys! The point is movement and thought go hand-in-hand. My students work better when they wiggle!
I teach in a rural, one-section school with a PreK-12 population of about 330 students.
The 23 students in my class make up the entire second grade! My group of students this year is unique and dear to my heart. They are full of energy, character, personality, and they make sure to keep me on my toes every single day.
My Project
We currently have four Hokki stools in our classroom and they are, by far, the most popular seating choice among all of my students! We practice alternative seating in our room, which means that no student has an assigned seat. They may move around throughout the day and sit where they are most comfortable. I have noticed that my students' attention span, focus, and effort all improve when they are using one of our Hokki stools. I believe that the ability to "wiggle while they work" allows worry and tension to be released and thoughts to remain attentive. Two more Hokki stools will allow two more second graders to benefit from this seating choice!
This project will improve our classroom by providing more of a resource that I know will improve my students' learning experience.
Hokki stools are simple, durable, and well-loved by my second graders.
