My Project

I teach a very diverse group of students who live in a residential care program. My students come to me from many different economic, social, and cultural backgrounds along with trauma, neglect, and abuse. They often tell me they hate to read when they first come to my classroom and then, when paired with a book they connect to, can't stop reading!

Our building does not have a library and our students usually cannot go to the public library for safety reasons.

My classroom is their only resource. I have been trying to build my library to have books to represent all of my students to encourage a love of reading. I ask them what they are interested in reading and then try to match them with a book.

My students use my classroom library to read books during independent reading time, they journal about things having to do with literature studies as they read. We also use the books to do novel studies throughout the year to help them with their reading fluency, comprehension, and retell skills.
