Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a class full of energetic, curious and compassionate first-graders. My students love to explore, ask questions, read, play and dance. They are learning about community involvement and always find ways to brighten each others' day. They love helping and learning.

Our school is located near downtown Los Angeles, California.

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am eager to provide my students with quality and equitable learning materials and opportunities. I look forward to promoting creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My Project

All students deserve culturally relevant and diverse texts in their repertoire! In 2016, 22% of all children's books published included characters of color. Our school is largely Latino and African American; however, we rarely see books with diverse characters. It is essential for readers to see themselves represented in the books they read.

Additionally, students need books that help teach social emotional learning, such as mindfullness, resilience, empathy, self-control, compassion.

Books, such as Listening to My Body, will provide students with the opportunity to discuss feelings of anxiety, anger, sadness, and excitement and how they can react to those emotions.

These texts will strengthen our love of reading while giving us the opportunity to learn about different people and cultures!
