My Students

"Can we read this?!" Imagine those words coming out of a 7 year old's mouth? I need to update the books in my room to meet the interest of today's children. It's hard to get children interested in reading, but that's what we need to do to increase word attack skills and comprehension.

The times are changing and so are the students' interest.

While I will always include the "classics" in my classroom library, I need to peak my students' interest to have them wanting to read. That and the simple fact that books, real books, wear out have affected our classroom library. Books (and the storage of them) are the cornerstone of every classroom!

My Project

Second grade is very hard. It's a big step in school. In first grade, the students learned to encode and decode words. In second grade, we learn to comprehend. That's the reason we read, to gain information. It's very important that the books are interesting to the students. Times and interests have changed from when we were in school. If the child isn't interested in the book, they don't pay attention to the story. If they don't pay attention, they won't comprehend. We need more stories they'll really enjoy. That's when comprehension happens.

But that's not all, the students need help in locating the right level/interest.

The organizational materials will help the students find the "Just right!" book quickly and easily.
