This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a third grade teacher in an English/Spanish Dual Language program. The goal of the program is to produce bilingual and biliterate students that are able to succeed academically in both languages. To reach this end, my students need access to high quality texts in both languages.

Unfortunately, it is always much easier to find these texts in English than in Spanish.

Since my classroom is the Spanish room, I constantly struggle with being able to find academic and engaging texts that correlate to those that are available in the classroom of my English counterpart. Furthermore, I work in a low- income area where many students do not have books to read at home. The books they check out and take home from our class library are often the only ones they have access to.

My Project

My students were so disappointed this year when they looked in our library and saw a dismal number of chapter books as compared to the amount available in the English room (see photo above). It broke my heart to think that the resources I was able to provide would not meet their needs.

They are SO eager to move on from picture books to chapter books that I decided I MUST find a way to increase the number of chapter books available to them.

They also need access to quality non-fiction books such as biographies. Please consider investing in the academic success of my eager readers!!!
