My Students

My students love books, but many of them do not have any books at home. I teach at a school that has a high rate of children in temporary housing. Most of my students receive free lunch and are at or below the poverty level. I would love to open up the wonderful world of current events and non-fiction books to my students. Reading non-fiction texts will help to increase their vocabulary. They love to read all different types of books.

My Project

My students will have a nice selection of non-fiction books on their level to choose from. Building a love for books and reading should occur in the early grades. Many of my students were struggling readers in September but now that they are starting to read more proficiently, they need books. By the time these books arrive, they will be excited whenever they get the opportunity to shop for books in our classroom library. Right now, our selection of books is not that great. Some of the books are torn and damaged. My students need Scholastic News and to see new, fresh books that are not being held together by tape.
