My Students

My students are a wonderful group of students. A typical day in our classroom starts of by singing a selected song, for the month, with an inspirational theme. For example, this month, each morning we stand and sing, Lean on Me, by Bill Withers. We use a karaoke machine, stand and sing.

Our class is filled 26 charming third graders.

As it is an inclusion class, many of the students have diverse learning styles and educational needs. All are motivated to learn and have made great progress this year. Students are very energetic, coming to school each morning bursting with stories and ideas that are filling their minds. Easily, their favorite part of the day is reading time, when they get to explore make believe characters and worlds as well as information about science, history, and biographies. My school is an inner-city school. We have approximately 700 students, ranging in grades, from Pre-K to 8th grade. It is a low income neighborhood--for many of the students, our school is a home away from home. We offer early opening, breakfast, and after-school activities until 7pm to help keep the students engaged and educated. We have after-school tutoring, soccer, basketball, arts, and dance. It is a wonderful school, and I have happily taught there for 18 yrs.

My Project

Each day, after lunch, I settle the students down by reading a story aloud to the class. As I read, students take notes or create artwork to reflect on the story. For the past two months, I have been reading the class Gary Paulsen novels, namely, Wood Song and Woods Runner. They love his stories, which always center around the wilderness and survival in nature. Last week, the class pleaded to read and study one of his novels as a class project. Sadly, my school does not have any class sets of his novels. Hatchet, is one of Paulsen's most riveting novels. I know my students will become enraptured by the plot and the main character. My students will learn many things from reading this novel. They will learn much about Canada and the Canadian wilderness. They will study and learn about survival skills. They will also study character development, plot, conflict, and theme. Activities will include class trips to museums and student survival technique demonstrations.

In this age of the Common Core, my school, like many others, has turned to s ready made curricula offered by the big education publication companies.

While there are many positive aspects to these workbooks, they offer only brief texts--informational and short stories. Because of this, students are deprived of the joy of studying a full novel. Nothing holds student interest as being immersed in a full novel, with a wonderfully intricate web of characters, plot twists, and themes.
