My Students

Help us reflect on our learning and teaching and grow in our practice!

My students are 2nd graders in a large urban district in Illinois.

Our community is high-poverty, with 96% of our students qualifying for free and reduced-priced lunch. With all of these challenges, our students come to school everyday with smiles on their faces, eager to learn. All of our students, but my students in particular are in need of technology in their everyday lives. Most students do not have computers at home, and therefore their exposure to technology is at school. Unfortunately, our school is not able to support the great need for the vast array of technology available for use in the classroom.

My Project

I am requesting a digital flip camera for my students and I to use in our classroom. I envision the camera being used in a variety of ways. I plan to use it to video tape my own lessons and reflect on my practice to improve my instruction. This point cannot be overstated. In my experience, the best form of professional development has been when I can watch myself in action. Unfortunately, that has been a rarity due to not having a video camera. The flip camera will give me unlimited opportunities to improve my instruction. Additionally, my students will be able to use the camera to video tape each other doing various activities (reports, plays, conduct research and interviews, etc.) This will be a great opportunity for students to take ownership of their own learning by using technology. Not only will they be incredibly engaged, but they will be learning through authentic experiences.

This project is so important to me as a professional and to my students as learners.

Sometimes it can be lonely (I know, it's hard to believe) in the classroom. Not for the lack of loving faces, but because there is never enough time for professional support and development. A camera will allow me to have necessary, immediate reflection on my practice. Your donation will be going to a teacher who wants nothing more than to educate children with the highest quality instruction possible. Thank you!
