Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine coming to this country and expecting a beautiful new life, only to come into a school building that is old, overcrowded, and falling apart. After many, many years of discussion about a new building, it is finally opening this fall! And my students deserve it.

Most of my students are diverse refugees and immigrants, speaking over 25 different languages, including Spanish, Burmese, Nepali, Somali, Swahili, and Arabic.

These kids are often overlooked and forgotten, but this new building is a huge confidence booster and reminds them that they are important.

My Project

I have implemented STEAM learning in the library this year with great success and support. Not only do the students enjoy the STEAM-related lessons, but the teachers do as well. They have seen the students collaborating, thinking, and creating and are excited to bring their classes for STEAM lessons.

I have seen students create things I didn't think were possible, just because they were given the opportunity.

My hope now is to open the library up for more small group Makerspace time, where students can come throughout the day to create, build, solve, and collaborate using our STEAM materials.

With your help, we can add more activities that enforce learning in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. For engineering, we are asking for more building materials like K'NEX and Keva Planks to help students with creativity and working together. For science, Snap Circuits will help with problem solving and and hands-on learning. To boost art in the Makerspace, we are asking for origami paper to pair with the origami books that we have in the library. Origami can help with fine motors skills and concentration. Finally, we want another Osmo base for our iPads to help increase technology use in the Makerspace. We hope these materials help students understand STEAM and want to further pursue these subjects in the future.
