My Students

Do you know what it's like to get hooked on a particular author or series, and not be able to find the next book in the set? Our students have that problem all the time, because some of our series are incomplete.

We are a charter school located in central Texas.

Our students come from all walks of life, but for many of our students, the school library is the only access they have to books. Our students LOVE to read, but much of our fiction collection is dated, with the average publish date of 1989. Our students deserve to read fun books by the best of contemporary children's authors, such as Dav Pilkey, Lemony Snickett, Suzanne Collins, and Rick Riordan.

My Project

Our students are aware of popular literature; they want to read the latest "Wimpy Kid" book, or "Captain Underpants". While these books may not be award-winning books, they are fun to read! And when students have fun reading, they read more. Series books are great for beginning independent readers because they are not only entertaining, but dependable. When a reader is "hooked" by an author or a series, you know they will not stop with just one; they have to finish the set. Some of these books will have a side benefit: they lead to students pursuing more information. For example, Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" is guaranteed to send students looking for the Greek myths and Greek history sections!

New books are cause for excitement in our school!

Since we are a charter school, we depend heavily on donations. While we are certainly happy for these donations, generally the books are not new, or are titles in which students are not interested in. These books I have requested will be popular with our students for many years to come.
