Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember watching Bill Nye the Science Guy videos as science lessons? I want my students to go beyond videos and have a hands-on experience with science. I believe this will motivate students to pursue STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in the future.

The first day of school I asked students what they were excited about in first and second grade.

The answer across the board? SCIENCE! My students are predominately Native American and African American. They live in the poorest county in North Carolina, and many of their parents work multiple jobs to support them. My school does not currently have a science program, but it is part of our Common Core Curriculum standards. Our students struggle with staying interested and motivated in school. They thrive on hands-on activities and love to explore!

My Project

I am requesting science activity tubs that come with different materials and manipulatives students can use throughout the year. My school does not have a science program or textbooks. Teachers often go out of pocket to buy materials such as seeds and butterfly eggs to conduct different science experiments. We often have to use science more as a supplement to literacy, focusing on text features and comprehension. I know that my students would love the resources provided in the science tubs, and these materials can be shared by first and second grade all year long. These materials would reach over 100 students!

I have a wonderful group of children that deserve hands-on learning.

They take care of materials and work well with others. My students can not wait until science starts. They are over the moon for simple activities such as planting seeds. I know that they would love these science activity tubs and having a chance to explore more topics such as magnetism and weather. I want students to continue exploring STEM fields in their future to benefit themselves and their families.
