My students need sets 6 copies each current, engaging, fun, and thoughtful novels to read "Ghosts of War: The True Story of a 19-Year-Old GI", "Thirteen Reasons Why", "Looking for Alaska", and "Unbroken" in student-led book clubs called "Literature Circles."

My Students

"I never read a book in my whole life!" This is something I hear, without fail, from at least one new student each August. Does this dishearten me? No way! I hear the challenge, and with high-interest book choices to give my students, I know I can defeat even the most dedicated book-hater!

My students live in close-knit neighborhoods and remote farms in our small, rural lakeside town in East Tennessee.

In their free time, these kids work part-time jobs, take care of younger siblings, play sports (a big focus in our town), and volunteer and relax with faith-based groups. These kids love football and skateboarding, huntin', fishin', four-wheelin' and muddin', playing video games, and driving to the "big city" to go shopping and see movies. They're funny and insightful, unpredictable and contrary, capable and respectful--in short, they are an all-around good group of teens!

My Project

Imagine walking into a classroom and seeing students sitting in small groups, books open, enthusiastically leading their own discussions on literature. This scene is a reality when we do Literature Circles in our classroom. Literature circles are student-led, in-class book clubs, where each small group in the class reads a different book of their choice. By allowing students to choose from a wide selection of high-interest, current novels for their Lit. Circles, I am able to entice even reluctant readers to dive in to a good book. By training students extensively on reading strategies and discussion skills, I am able to put ownership of learning into their own hands as they lead their own book clubs. The result is an authentic learning experience that will prepare students to become lifetime learners and active and engaged readers!

By supplying my class with new books for their Literature Circles, you will be helping these small town kids look out a window to a wider world of experience.
