Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in kindergarten involves students learning the alphabet, numbers and reading skills. At age 5 students are excited to learn but are not able to focus during long teaching lectures or mass produced workbook pages. 5 year olds love hands on activities. We use centers everyday.

My students are 4-5 year old kindergartners.

Many of them have never been to pre-k and are enjoying their first year in school. They come from shelters, foster homes and low-income housing where many of their basic needs are not met. Help these students from the Bronx get their basic educational needs met! The school is a Title I low income government funded public school. More than half my class qualifies for free breakfast and lunch due to low income. The parents are in their early twenties and struggle to support their child academically. My students are excited to learn and these games and activities will help fuel their excitement.

My Project

These materials requested are educational centers. Instead of using mass produced workbook pages, students engage in educational activities throughout the day including hands on centers. These centers will improve their counting, phonics and alphabet knowledge. Everyday students learn a new skill or strategy like counting numbers up to ten. Instead of just going to their seat and completing a worksheet or workbook page, they go into an educational center or activity. The items requested would be some of the centers we would use each day. Students will learn counting up to ten using puzzles, counting pieces and other fun hands on manipulatives. For reading, students will be able to use beginning sound centers for sorting pictures by the first sound as well as improving their letter recognition.

My project will greatly improve the classroom of these 5 year olds because center time is when students have the most fun and learn the most.

When learning is fun, the students are more engaged and excited to join in. On a teacher's budget we are not able to provide enough fun centers throughout the year. Donating will allow these kids a chance to have fun at school. They can also be reused each year! These centers will help keep them excited to learn.
