I teach 2nd grade at PS 202, a K-8 school located in the East New York section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free school lunch. I noticed last year that most of my students did not have a knowledge base of the borough in which they live, Brooklyn, or even New York City as a whole. Upon recognition of this fact, I began devising lessons based around Brooklyn and New York City; often bringing in pictures, newspapers, and books that would make lessons interesting and really come to life. The children loved learning about their city, and I would often hear them telling other students and prep teachers some of the interesting things that they learned about NYC. The class even wrote letters to the Statue of Liberty Foundation stating why they believe that the Statue of Liberty should reopen. Ths coming school year, in additon to the lessons I created last year, I would like to have a section in our classroom library dedicated to books about or pertaining to Brooklyn and/or New York City. My students live in the greatest city in the world, but sadly many do not have the opportunity to explore their city because of parents' work schedules and other responsibilities, and also because of financial constraints. My students love to read, and I would like to be able to provide them with engaging and informative reading material that will enhance their lives.
