Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are AWESOME! They are in a Special Day Class with me for English and Social Studies. There are 10 boys and 2 girls in my class. The students have different learning disabilities such as Dyslexia, ADHD, and SLD. While they are all eager to learn, their disabilities can create barriers to their progress. This year it has been our classroom mission to have every student increase their reading level!.

Increasing their reading skills will give them the ability to access the curriculum in every classroom.

My Project

The area that my special ed students struggle with the most has always been reading comprehension. So many of my students have difficulty with processing information through text, which makes reading a typical novel especially challenging. This makes it difficult for them to have positive feelings about reading.

Graphic novels allow readers of all levels to develop a love of reading.

The illustrations give context clues which help readers decipher meaning and remember events. Graphic novels have helped build the reading confidence of my students, many who struggle to get through the first chapter of most books. These books will be a great addition to our classroom library.
