Help Ms. Czaicki

I teach Forensic Science to 9th and 12th graders in a high-poverty, minority, urban environment. The purpose of my class is to make science applicable and interesting to students who are often intimidated by it. It serves as a hook to get the 9th graders interested in science and as an opportunity for the 12th graders to apply their science knowledge and review for college.

Our school is a small urban school, and therefore funding is very limited for any extra supplies. We struggle to get the basic supplies, such as copy paper and dry erase markers, so special purchases such as frogs for dissection and one time use are out of the question. However, my students love hands-on science labs, especially those as intense as dissection.

To make this project a reality this year, we need 50 frogs to dissect in pairs, latex gloves, and 2 additional dissection trays. This will be the first time many of my students have ever dissected frogs. The experience will give them a hands-on connection to what we have learned in class along with an actual appreciation of the body. Looking at a real organ is much different than a picture. The frog dissection lab will be our closing lab in our anatomy unit and students will also complete a lab practical exam with them. The practical exam is something that many of them will encounter in college and is a great way to prepare them for different types of testing.

You will make it possible for many of my students to complete their first ever dissection! They will gain an appreciation for what the body actually looks like on the inside. In addition, this project will help prepare them for the more varied projects and testing that they will face in college, such as lab practicals.
