Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fourth graders at a charter school in a lower income area. Since we are a charter school, and in a low income area of the city, we rely heavily on grants and community contributions. My students have a love of books and reading. I try to foster that in each group of students that walk through the door of my classroom. A tradition I started last year was to use the Judy Blume "Fudge" books for my 'read aloud' to the students. My students really enjoy these books (they can relate to the characters as they are the same age). Since my students enjoy the books so much, I would like to start having reading groups where the students read the books and discuss them with their reading group team members. This will not only be something they will enjoy, it will also improve their reading comprehension as they discuss books they have read and enjoyed. At the moment, however, this is not possible. My class library only has two copies of one of the four books. In order for my students to experience the entire series we will need 6 copies of each of the four books. Your contribution would allow my students to have both an educational and enjoyable experience that would increase their love of books and reading. Thank you for your consideration.
