Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school located in Homestead, Florida. 98% of our students are economically disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced price lunch. The majority of my students are struggling readers who are below grade level. Additionally, a large number of them are classified as ELL or English Language Learners; and a significant number of their parents are migrant workers who speak little or no English. Also, my students have little or no access to computers or the internet at home.

Despite their challenges, they come to school eager to learn and highly motivated.

Their hard work has paid off this school year! As a result of their efforts, 79% of them will be promoted to fourth grade without having to participate in summer school. Overall, my students made significant learning gains on the District Reading Assessment.

My Project

The majority of my students are English Language Learners, and a significant number of them are struggling readers. We need a listening center and audio books will allow them to access literature, engage in shared reading, and help them enjoy books!

Additionally, a listening center helps to address the varied learning styles within my classroom.

Audio books help to support auditory learners, by modeling good interpretative reading, intonation and expression. They help to expose students to new vocabulary and introduces them to new genres they many not have considered.

A listening center will also help with classroom management. During small group instruction, my struggling readers will remain engaged, and there will be less interruption during small group sessions.
