We Love Arts and Crafts!!!

My students need arts and crafts materials for an After School Enrichment program, including various color paints, a set of brushes, a set of 10 paint bowls, 1 packet of water color paper, a drying rack, modeling clay in various colors, a set of clay cutters and rolling pins, 4 packs of sun-catcher painting kits (a favorite), collage boards of different shapes and sizes, a packet of craft foam sheets, wiggly eyes, and more.

I teach English as a Second language to grades K-5 in NYC. The population of students speak a variety of languages that include; Haitian Creole, Russian, Urdu, Chinese, Italian, Polish, Arabic, Hebrew and Spanish.

Our school is a Title I school, meaning we have a high level of poverty in the community. These children mostly go home after school and have limited support from their hard working parents. My after-school program offers them not only additional instructional time but also a much needed break from the otherwise boring afternoons at home in front of the TV.

These arts and crafts materials are novelties to children who do not have access to them at home. At school they may get only one period per week of art and they truly are starved for a creative outlet. My program is popular and students remain in the program year after year.

Giving to this after school enrichment program is important to those less fortunate students who need extra support. This support must be provided by the school because their families cannot otherwise afford it. Reading is a key componant but the arts and crafts activities serve as a hook to draw students in to the topic we are studying.
