In my opinion, the best thing a teacher can do in the classroom is to read aloud each day. I always encourage my students to listen, engage, and connect to the story. Fostering a love of reading for enjoyment is so important for students. Read alouds are a great way to model so many areas of literacy. I came across a book written by Maria Walther, The Ramped-Up Read Aloud, that instantly excited me about next year's read alouds. As I was going through the text, I realized there are so many quality books available to meet our needs. There are many that I have not used in my classroom that meet a wide variety of skills and standards.
Most students (and teachers) look forward to a good read-aloud.
By adding a variety of books to our classroom library students can interact with a meaningful read-aloud and then return to that book later on during independent reading time.
My students are deserving of quality books that are engaging and meaningful to what they are learning. Read alouds reach students, no matter their current reading ability. Many come from homes that do not model reading. Hearing and participating in daily read alouds is where it is at for them. When learning is fun (in the form of a read aloud) there are endless possibilities!
