My Students

Students do not have a choice about whether or not they will enter a digital age -- it is here and now. Students must be prepared to function in a digital society, and this can only happen as they are immersed in a curriculum that integrates technology in purposeful ways. Classroom access is a must!

My students are fifth graders with varied academic needs.

Approximately one third of my students require specialized education, as outlined in their individualized education plans, but they are in an inclusive regular education environment where their strengths are embraced and they are given the support they need. Students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. My fifth grade class is among two others in a third through fifth grade building. Our goal is, and has always been, to develop bright minds and good character. My fifth graders are active participants in an environment in which they are given choice and have opportunities to guide their own learning. Differentiation is also an essential element of their learning. In addition, our district has made a commitment to technology, to the extend possible with the financial resources we have in the state of Illinois. Although, this has not allowed for computers for access by students in the classroom.

My Project

We need a computer workstation to provide students with a means of creating meaning and displaying their learning in a digital age. Students are not only expected to meet Illinois State Learning Standards in all curricular areas, but they are also charged with meeting technology standards (NETS) in the digital age in which they live. A classroom student computer workstation is a relatively inexpensive and effective tool for integrating technology into the regular curriculum in a meaningful and motivating way. For the first time, students would have Internet access within the classroom, enabling them to research and learn about appropriate use. All students in the classroom setting would benefit from this technology when it is used for interactive lessons in various curricular areas, is utilized with our brand-new math series allowing students to actively use online math manipulatives, and will be an aid to students in their own presentations and creation of projects.

Ultimately, students must be prepared for the digital age in which they live.

Technology has long been a motivator and a means for students to express themselves, interact with their world, and extend learning beyond the classroom. Providing purposeful, real-life application of their learning, through the use of computer technology, is essential. Unfortunately, finances often limit access. For this reason, your assistance will provide much needed classroom access for all of my 5th graders.
