I teach general music in urban Illinois to over 600 students at 2 elementary schools, grades K-8. In music class students sing, play instruments, create music, and compose. Over the past year my music students at the magnet school have been fortunate to receive 20 ukuleles through the generosity of Donors Choose contributors! These instruments allow my students to create music in a social environment and to perform music while singing in a group. Only 2 things are missing that will keep my students from strumming their ukuleles: replacement strings, and ukulele books! The strings are a necessity because at times strings do break through natural wear and tear. In order to have my music students perform, create, and write music for the ukuleles, I am requesting books. The instruction books requested include songs from a variety of cultures including Hawaii and Portugal as well as popular songs. Students will learn to play chords, strum, how to accompany singers, and how to play melodies. Eventually students will write their own songs based on this instruction. Your donation to this project will enrich the instrumental music instruction for students , and will allow students to develop skills in singing, note reading, and composing!
