Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The best way to improve your literacy is to read. The best way to foster a love of reading is to give kids access to the books they love to read. In our class students are given time to read any book they choose. A classroom library filled with highly engaging books is invaluable to having a successful choice reading program.

Prioritizing choice reading time has led kids who were skeptical about reading to discover a new passion.

One student told our librarian, "I never knew I was reader before." Another said, "I can't believe I am actually going to finish a book." Almost all of my students speak more than one language and are developing their literacy skills. After 3rd grade, kids are not learning to read, but expected to read to learn. Filling gaps in their literacy is the most important skill we can build to ensure their academic success.
