Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students get extremely excited about books and are willing to spend hours a day reading, yet many of them have never even been to a bookstore and couldn't afford to buy a book if they were to visit. I want them to have the same access to books that any other child might have.
My students are inner-city children from the South Bronx.
Most of my students are Latino, African American and recent African immigrants. My students are passionate about stories. When I read to my students they are enraptured. My students have a very limited understanding of what books are actually out there in the world, however. Most of them have never seen a bookstore. They only see the books that we have for them in the classroom. Unfortunately, our classroom library has lost much of its luster. Due to changes in the economy, we have not had a big influx of books in almost three years. In addition, my school doesn't have a library for them to access books outside the classroom. There is a public library close by, but many students do not feel safe going there. My classroom library is therefore the only option for most of them to feed their reading lives. I know that my students will read as much as any other child-- or more-- if given the chance.
My Project
I have requested a set of books to begin the refurbishment of my classroom library. All of these books are series books. This is especially important because if students try and like one book, they can then continue reading the rest of the series. Reading through a single series of multiple books could raise a single child's reading level significantly. I have read all of these books and authors myself. I can personally guarantee that these titles are both engaging for students and well written enough so that they will support the reading strategies that we teach the students in class. These books will impact my students lives in that they will have access to the same hot titles that children in neighborhoods across the country are passionate about. They won't feel as if they are being asked to devote an hour a day-- which is what we ask of our students in terms of reading time-- to books that are little more than leftovers from when their own parents were in middle school.
This project will have a direct impact on the lives of 90 sixth graders in the South Bronx.
They will each have access to books that they will laugh about, think about and talk about. Many of my students are reading below grade level. These books are appropriate for where they are now as readers and will help them move forward so that they can leave sixth grade ready for the challenges ahead. These titles will teach my students what it feels like to read for pleasure.
