My Students

Ernest Hemingway said, "I like to listen and I have learned a great deal from listening carefully." Most people never listen. My students want use MP3 players to listen to books.

My school is close to two military bases, and a significant number of my students are dependents of deployed military personnel.

Our small K-6 public school is over 40 years old. Many of my wonderful students are deemed at-risk. Over half of my students qualify for free and reduced price breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. We have all the needs and none of the resources of other schools. And although my students represent the very best in America, many of my students do not have access to simple, inexpensive technology like MP3 players. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. One out of every ten children is in a bilingual program, and as a group we are 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. My students are struggling to learn how to read and communicate.

My Project

As the library media specialist at a small, urban elementary school, I struggle to provide learning opportunities to all my students. My school is an old school and has limited resources. Although many of my students have limited access to technology, they are still expected to be successful readers, writers, and producers of presentations. I have requested four iPod shuffle MP3 players and 1 Mach Speed MP3 player so that students can listen to stories during their daily reading intervention time. I want these MP3 players so the students can listen to stories and develop their vocabulary, reading, and listening skills. Access to stories on MP3 players would open up new reading opportunities for my K-2 graders. My students would be able to borrow the MP3 players during their RTI reading block to listen to stories. I know these MP3 players would help build fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, listening skills, and even pronunciation skills for my at risk students.

Every child deserves a chance at success.

Reading is the most important skill in elementary school. With the help of donors, my K-2 at risk students can become better readers. These MP3 players will give students access to books and stories. Every day, I help provide reading intervention for primary students. While I work with one group, other students can work independently and listen to books. Please help me help my struggling readers. Make reading come alive.
