My Students

Aristotle said "What we have to learn to do, we learn by doing." My students want to learn by doing. My school is not able to provide them with all the resources they need to do this. They are inquisitive, intelligent, and driven. I want my students to achieve the best they can, by doing.

Last week, one of my students asked me to take a picture of him with his 82% so he can show his dad how well he was doing in class.

Another student stopped by my classroom early to show me he was wearing an Ohio State (my Alma Mater) shirt. A third student asked me to wear his football jersey on game day because "you believe in me." In one word, my students are inspiring. My students come from an area known as the Delta which boasts low socioeconomic status and little opportunity. Even with the struggling economy and high crime rates, my students want to be policemen, OB-GYN s, nurses, teachers and military officers. Lack of resources has not limited my students potential up until this point, and I don't want it to start now.

My Project

Students learn by doing. In a school where they have been accustomed to getting worksheets, I want my students to be active in their learning process. Human Anatomy and Physiology is an interesting subject with an infinite amount of real world applications. But, before we get to the interesting information (body systems!) we must first cover building blocks of the body and tissues. It has been shown that students struggle to learn about things they cannot see, and these tissue slides will help them overcome that barrier. By having the ability to use microscopes to view slides on their own, students will be able to discover structure on their own. Furthermore, they will be able to relate the structure they see to the function they learn. In the past, I have attempted to teach them by using PowerPoint presentations and pictures, but nothing replaces the experience of discovering something on your own. I want my students to have that experience as often as possible in my classroom.

These slides will help my students discover their own material instead of me telling them.

During out tissues unit students will be able to look at slides themselves which will not only make them a more active part of the learning process, but it will also allow them to hone their microscope skills. With so many of my students wanting to go into the medical field, these skills are imperative for them to perfect now. These slides can also be used during the following units to relate everything.
