Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a diverse group of boys and girls with amazing personalities that blow us away every day. Our students live in the heart of a bustling urban center. They are primarily African-American and Latino. We are a special needs public school. We have students from all over our city who attend some of our special programs.

All of my students have special needs, many are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Multiple Disabilities.

Their communication skills range from non-verbal to just needing a few pragmatic tweaks. They are learning to communicate in their own ways as they learn not only life skills but academics as well.

My Project

I work with multiple disabled children. There are many activities of daily living that they need assistance with. One of the biggest ones is feeding. Our students are on many different types of diets. Currently they are being fed by adults with regular utensils. We want them to be more independent.

Self feeding is one of the most important activities of daily living they can learn to make their quality of life that much better.

The students are motivated to eat, they just need tools that make it easier for them. Some students need utensils that bend because the twisting motion when we use a standard utensil, caused their food to fall. Other students need the bigger grip utensils as they learn to hold onto the utensil. Some students can hold a typical utensil but drop them, so the adaptive hand motility aid will prevent that from happening.

The scoop plates will help keep their food in on the plate instead of going on the floor as they learn to self feed. Some of our students put everything in their mouths. The strong chewy tubes will be used to help provide sensory input, keep inappropriate items out of their mouths, and eventually wean the students off of putting anything in their mouth besides food.
