Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our children are dreamers. They are eager and motivated to learn. They come from families who are hard-working, and they are teaching their children that same motivation for learning. Many of our families fall below the national poverty levels; some experiencing the situation of being homeless or are home insecure. In addition, English is a second language for the majority of our families or they are bilingual households.

Every child deserves a great start.

Our children deserve no less than great. Our children are getting ready for Kindergarten, and it is our job to prepare them! When parents and students are able to worry less about where materials needed for school will come from they can put paychecks towards other things and will make attending school more accessible leading to a greater outcome for school readiness.

My Project

I am seeking writing materials that will increase fine motor strength. Fine motor muscles are those muscles in the hand that aid us in writing; when those muscles are strong, pencil grasp and hand writing improves. I have been challenged to provide high quality materials and writing opportunities in my writing center this school year after attending a SEEDS early literacy training. In order to do this, I am in need of materials that will strengthen hand muscles and interest my students.

Preschoolers benefit from daily writing experiences, so it is helpful to embed writing in the daily routine, such as having children write (or attempt to write) their names at sign-in and during choice times (NAEYC, 2017).

Children need varied experiences to write and more than writing utensils to strengthen muscles. Not all children are interested or ready to use writing utensils and so you meet them where they are at so that all students benefit. This is why I have asked for stickers, stamps and WikiStix. Pulling stickers off a sheet can be challenging for a preschooler who has not yet strengthened the muscles in their fingers. This opportunity is exciting and encourages children to strengthen their fingers. WikiStix require a child to manipulate them by twisting and bending, I have asked for the alphabet set so they will be encouraged to create letters. Stamps are a way for students to communicate with letters when they do not yet have the strength to form letters.

For children who are ready to write I have asked for rock crayons and golf pencils. These small writing utensils make a tri-pod or three finger grasp more likely. A tri-pod grasp is the ideal way to hold a writing utensil. I am also seeking a magnetic paper to teach writing notes/letters.
