My Students

Are you discouraged by the state of the United States' science and math test scores? Me too! Help us understand weather and energy concepts, fractions, and money, too!

My students come from an extremely rural area.

It is a tight knit community where education is valued but the poverty level often makes it challenging to succeed. Many students graduate high school and enter into the work force as opposed to taking a college path. It is my hope that today's students will want to further their education. By strengthening their background in both science and math this will be more likely to become a reality.

My Project

In today's world science and math are the key to many advanced careers. These puzzles are self checking activities that provide visual reinforcement to skills such as matter, weather, the solar system, plants, simple machines, fractions, money, and so much more. There is a high population of English Language Learners that will so greatly benefit from the visual representations on these puzzles. This activity will supplement my teaching and be used as a chance for inquiry and exploration within given areas. Boys are often very interested in science and math, but it is my desire to see the girls in my classroom gravitate toward these subjects as well. Each of these puzzles align with the current curriculum our school is using and will further strengthen the students' overall understanding of science and math.

As the common core state standards roll out over the next two years the rigor of curriculum is expected to increase.

Students will be expected to deeply understand skills and how they are interconnected. Science and math are two subjects that are so closely related. This is a perfect opportunity to make a difference for my students. They will be taking high stakes tests from henceforth in their educational career, and this will provide them a great foundation.
