My Students

My students are a part of the NYSAA program known as ACES. These amazing students are a low function population in the larger special education population. Despite being in High School many of my students cannot read beyond a first grade level. They are a part of a work study program as well.

They develop functional life skills and academics in one place.

This helps them to gain trainable career-oriented skills for life after they leave our program. The students have the opportunity to stay in this program until they are 21, meaning many of my students will be with me for 8 years. They work hard and deserve the best we can give them.

As a Math, Transition and Work Study teacher, it is my job to bring them a traditional high school curriculum in a way that they can understand. I do this in a variety of ways, trying to help them maximize their potential.

My Project

My students running a small copy center to help them learn real life job skills in our work study program. The organizer, folders, staplers and paper clips will provide them with the tools necessary to practice and develop useful organizational skills. The ink is necessary for making the copies that the students produce. Having access to these consumable resources is important for them. This enables them to make mistakes that they can learn from.

The copy center helps them develop functional life skills for an office environment, as well as practice with problem solving skills that can be generalized throughout life.
