Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I brought in a picture of myself digging up fossils and an actual fossil bone, students who generally were less-likely to be active participants in lessons eagerly pored over books and materials related to the subject of prehistoric life and asked questions they normally wouldn't have.

My students represent a wide diversity of cultures, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds, and understand a variety of languages.

They learn best through hands-on activities that get them to discuss, ask questions, read about, and write their findings. Our school is located in the busy city, far-removed from the Badlands of the Midwest that is home to many of the species which we will study, and regulations prohibit us from field trips to even relatively-close dig sites/trackways, so I bring my experiences to life for them by recreating dig site and science prep lab settings in my classroom.

My Project

As I have in years past, immersing my students in the scientific process is the foundation for reading, writing, and math-related activities associated with the unit on Prehistoric Life. I have them read, ask questions, test out theories about dinosaur trackways and their feeding habits, and learn how paleontologists do their job to help us understand more about animals that are alive today, as well as to comprehend extinction. Students record their findings in Science Observation journals, engage in hard-matix and sand "digs", using the proper equipment, and cast replicas of fossils, learning to utilize planning and graphing skills throughout the process.

By donating to this project, your generosity would allow my students and those of future classes to participate in a variety of enrichment experiences that would help to broaden their understanding of basic concepts and help them to apply what they have learned in a multi-disciplinary approach to learning.

Learning about the past will help them to make connections to life in the present, empowering them to see the world from a new perspective as they go forward through their academic lives.
