At P.S. 198, I have the opportunity to bring to my students the joy of learning through a theme unit on dinosaurs and prehistoric life. As the population I teach is comprised of children whose families are primarily at or below poverty-level (87%), this unit presents with a rare opportunity for the children to explore and be exposed to many scientific and cross-curricular experiences, i.e.: examining fossils and how they were formed, learning about how the continents separated over time, which led some animals to remain in certain areas and not in others. Students will engage in basic research on prehistoric topics of their choice, culminating in a research paper. With the assistance of a local paleontologist, students learn to formulate questions and develop scientific reasoning to inquire about topics of interests within this unit, such as "Why and how did dinosaurs become extinct?" and "Why is it important to prevent the future extinction of other species?" They learn to distinguish scientific fact from fiction, and attempt to replicate the experience of an amateur paleontologist, going on a simulated "dig" in the classroom and making fossils. Ultimately, students become expert at comprehending thematic subtopics, and learn to apply their knowledge in the areas of Art, Science, Balanced Literacy, Mathematics, and Social Studies, as they develop a love of learning through the study of dinosaurs. Please donate the various books and supplies that we need for this project.
