We Could Be (Gym) Heroes

My students need new sports equipment - new balls that don't have missing chunks, scooters that aren't missing wheels, scrimmage vests for some friendly competition, a speaker that gets loud enough for the kids to hear!

My Students

Come on, be honest... wasn't gym class your favorite when you were a kid? Now, as a physical education teacher I may be biased on this, but I think it's fair to say that most kids really look forward to gym class, and most classes only receive gym once a week... which is why I would like to take gym class up to the next level for my students!

My school is a Title 1 elementary school located in Brooklyn.

All of my students receive free school lunch. Our students are bursting with energy, and enthusiasm, and we try our best to provide them with as much opportunity as possible. I was able to order a few pieces of gym equipment this year, but there are no more funds left in the budget for the remainder of the year. Every day I pull out foam balls for the kids to play with and I see chunks of foam missing from them and I know that I have to do something about this!

My Project

We have been playing volleyball with beach balls, which is fine to begin with, but the kids are ready to play "real" volleyball. They deserve to have sports equipment that isn't falling apart from years of use. When we play team games, having scrimmage vests will make it so much easier to know who is on their team! New scooters will breathe new life into our scooter races, as well as really work on the kids' upper body strength. I need to do mandated fitness testing with the 4th & 5th graders, and the kids must follow cues from a track... with a new speaker they will be able to hear the cues clearly, and not miss cues like they do with my current radio.
