Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an amazing, joyful group of 4 and 5 year old Pre-K students who enjoy learning through play. They soak up the world around them like little sponges! Our Pre-K through 5th grade elementary school is located in South Gate, California. Approximately 98% of our student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, and the majority of my students are from a lower socioeconomic background.

The disruption in traditional education caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has severely impacted my little learners in ways I could never have anticipated.

At school, my students love to engage in daily conversation with their peers, and are just beginning to practice how to listen politely to others and participate in classroom discussions. The abrupt shift to distance learning has required my very young students to try and learn these important social skills in an unfamiliar online format.

My Project

The majority of my students reside in cramped apartments and small homes, oftentimes sharing common living spaces with many family members. This kind of living situation doesn't usually lend itself to a quiet, student-centered environment.

My students need a way to drown out the noise at home in order to focus during distance learning.

During Zoom meetings, my preschoolers often can't hear me or their classmates due to excessive background noise. A set of headphones would allow my students the ability to listen during our Zoom meetings together, without the outside distractions that often interfere with participation and engagement. This much-needed equipment will ensure that my students receive an equal opportunity for success during this challenging time.
