Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to be in middle school? You wake up late, still groggy from staying up way too late reading a book, you roll over and hit the snooze button. Before you know it, you are late and you are going to miss the bus. You go quickly and without really thinking...

My students come from all different walks of life.

Most of them are immigrants and are new to the experience of a formal education. My school is working diligently to become a resource for the surrounding community. My students are mostly well behaved and very kind. They do share one common trait, a majority of them are growing up in poverty. Approximately 91% receive free or reduced lunch. Thus, we are working very hard to not only teach our content area but to show these amazing children how to establish healthy patterns for life.

My Project

The majority of what I requested are healthy snack options. I have taught in high poverty schools for the past 5 years, and food is a major motivator for even the most challenging student. I believe that it is because they are growing and may not have healthy eating habits modeled at home. Moreover, they are still learning how their choices have outcomes. Skipping breakfast is not a good choice because by lunch (which is late in the day), they are starving. My school will also supplement the snacks with a fresh fruit or vegetable option 2-3 times per week. We had amazing results with this program last year. I also asked for dry erase materials because the students work on dry erase boards a lot and nothing is worse to them than a dead marker or dirty board. The Post-It notes are for me to check their understanding. The last thing I would like is an iPad keyboard because I am working diligently to incorporate technology into the classroom, and the keyboard will help accomplish that goal.

These children are our future!

I must teach them not only math but social skills, healthy lifestyle skills, conflict management, hygiene, how to be a productive U.S. citizen, etc. By donating, you will touch the lives of hundreds of children and their families!
