My Students

Have you ever been writing and just can't think of how to spell a word? What do you? Go check the dictionary right? Well, my precious little writers are trying to do just that, but the only dictionaries we have are picture dictionaries that have a very limited number of words - so frustrating!

My second grade students are the best!

They are a mixed group of special education, ESL and general education students. They have been through amazingly difficult situations in their personal lives but show up everyday with can-do attitudes, smiles on their faces and a hug for their lucky teacher. They are becoming amazing little writers. They have recently fallen head over heels in LOVE with adjectives. I am constantly amazed at their desire to include exciting and impressive adjectives to their writing. Their main issue? They don't know how to spell them. They know how to use the dictionary and try their best, but the only dictionaries we have in our classroom are very elementary picture dictionaries, and these rarely have the fantastic words they are looking for. Our school is only four years old and our library does not yet have class sets of dictionaries for students to use.

My Project

I want my students to be able to find the perfect word to embellish their writing! I would love to receive this set of 10 dictionaries to help make that happen. Students will have access to the dictionaries whenever they would like. I have a writing center that the dictionaries would be housed in, and available to my students at any time. Their writing is amazing now, I can only imagine what it will be like when they add in all the words they are coming up with!

I am passionate about teaching writing.

I feel it is a skill that is often lacking in this age of the "text message". My students have not yet fallen victim to "text speak", as they do not have access to much technology, so I see this as the PERFECT time to hook them and develop them into thoughtful and resourceful writers! I feel that access to these dictionaries will motivate them to add new and interesting words to their writing!
