Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is the key to a child's success! For my struggling students living in high poverty, they do not yet know the powerful and enchanting world of books. I want to help my students experience the joy of reading as it will open doors for a successful future!

My students live in a high needs urban area with limited supplies and difficult family lives.

School is their safe-haven. Many children grow up in bilingual homes and bring limited English skills, if any, to the classroom. In our ICT classroom, my 29 munchkins are a mix of general education and special education students who struggle to read grade level texts. Nevertheless, my student's eyes brighten up each time a book is opened and lively pictures and words jump off the page! School is a safe place for the children to escape to learn and grow at their own pace. My students have been learning to read with broken, ripped, and inadequate leveled books due to a dwindling school budget. They amaze me each day as they continue to stay positive and eager to learn despite their daily struggles.

My Project

I want to empower students through art and literature by exposing them to the English language as much as possible! With the Elephant and Piggie books, we will be able to perform Reader's Theaters and partner read to make the pictures and stories jump off the pages! The read-alongs will reinforce classic books that we read in small groups and allow for differentiation in our diverse classroom. In addition, the sight word center materials will allow the students to practice the basics so that they can work their way up toward grade-level texts and meet the Common Core standards in a fun way!Their fluency and decoding skills will soar! It would mean the world to my students to have these valuable literature materials and the opportunity to dive into the wonderful world of reading!

I believe in each of my students.

Funding a project such as this one will reinforce the belief that people care about each of them and want them to succeed. Learning anything new for the first time is never easy. However, once my children learn the basics of reading they will have opportunities for success for the rest of their lives!
