My Project

My students this year love to listen to stories and create projects to go along with them. You should see how quiet they get when I announce story time or even read stories from the curriculum! Storytelling is also a wonderful way to share a culture's history. Our state standards in every academic area are requiring a focus lesson or more on the contributions and history of the indigenous people in our country and I am excited to share that with my students.

While I have traveled to learn about our indigenous people, the best way I can see to teach my First Graders is through the use of storytelling.

These books are a hands-on way to help them remember what they have learned. The dreamcatcher is an artifact for Minnesota's indigenous people, so it would be highly appropriate for the students to learn about and create them. I want my students to get an authentic picture of the people who first inhabited our state. their rich culture and contributions. I don't want to just give lip service. These are the resources I have found when I have searched for appropriate ways to teach about indigenous people.

These first graders are so excited to learn and they seem to learn best this year through projects and stories. They ask to learn about new things like penguins, the environment, and the solar system. Some of these aren't even in the curriculum, but they are thirsting for knowledge. Since this standard has been implemented, I want to tap into that desire to learn for them!
