My Students

HPE is part of a naturally integrated community in the urban city of Los Angeles. The diversity within our school population is tremendous. With a population of just under 700 students, there are 26 different languages spoken and roughly one third of our student body population are English Language Learners. In addition, we also service students with various special needs and those who are identified as gifted and talented.

Within my classroom of 24 eager learners in second grade, I have 9 who are identified as English Language Learners and 1 who receives special education services for learning disabilities.

They come to school each day excited to participate in classroom discussions, problem solve, and develop their social skills with their peers. They are creative and inventive and have a passion to learn and experience different things.

My Project

We will be collaborating with teachers and students across multiple grade levels for this project. Students will initially work in small groups researching environmental issues in our community. Each class will then bring their work to the larger group. Building upon students’ learning and findings from their research, all students will collaborate and generate ideas and solutions to make a positive impact in our community and environment

The students will create various products such as bottle cap magnets, planters, pencil holders reusing plastic bottles, and stationery items such as hand-made recycled paper.

These items will be created by reusing recyclables found at our school site and from home. The supplies such as magnet strips, glue gun, and Sharpie markers will be used to create and decorate plastic bottles and bottle caps. Acrylic paint and paint brushes will be used to decorate the plastic bottles. Other supplies such as the "Earth and Environment" theme box and various books will be used in the classroom to generate questions and find answers through research.

To encourage multiple learning styles, students will create posters and service announcements, put on plays and skits to promote what they have learned.

We will provide opportunities for children to create new ideas and products by reusing, recycling, and re-purposing recyclables. Students will be taught problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Focusing on recycling, students will be addressing issues around the world, and come up with ideas on how they can take part in solving these issues within our school community.
