My Students

Hancock Park Elementary is part of a naturally integrated community in the heart of Los Angeles. Our school is located in a multicultural neighborhood and the demographics of our student population reflects this diversity. With a population of just under 700 students, there are 26 different languages spoken and roughly one third of our student body population are English Language Learners. In addition, we also service students with various special needs and those who are identified as gifted and talented.

My class is particular is a self-contained Autism class.

I have nine boys in total: 1 first grader, 6 kindergarteners, and 2 transitional kindergarteners. My students are curious learners, artists, and kind-hearted people. They come to school each day excited to participate in classroom discussions, problem solve, and develop their social skills with their peers. They are creative and inventive and have a passion to learn and experience different things.

My Project

As part of a school wide teacher professional development project, I will be working with a group of kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade teachers to develop and teach an arts-infused inquiry-based unit about recycling. With our students, we will be actively engaging our school community and working together to create a better, cleaner environment. We will be teaching our students and talking to them about how they can clean our school environment and the community. Through this Donor’s Choose, I am requesting books for my students to read and use for research to learn more about our cause. Building upon students’ learning and findings from their research, all students will collaborate and generate ideas and solutions to make a positive impact on our community and environment.

We will be encouraging students to take action to better our school community and beyond by collecting recyclables.

We will provide opportunities for children to create new ideas and products by reusing, recycling, and repurposing recyclables found at our school site and from home. The students will create various products such as bottle cap magnets and stationary items such as hand-made recycled paper. The art supplies funded through this Donor’s Choose will be use to create and decorate these crafts! We will then have students demonstrate what they've learned over the course of this unit by creating a "museum" to showcase our finished projects. Lastly, we will be selling these crafts at our school's annual Spring Carnival. The money raised from our recycled crafts fundraiser will be donated to an environmental nonprofit!
