My Students

"Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known" - Carl Sagan As a teacher of high school students on the autistic spectrum, I am inspired and amazed on a daily basis by the skills my students display.

My students are on the autistic spectrum and are part of my self contained 6:1:1 class.

The skills my students display vary greatly. Many of the skills in my classroom are "splintered", where students show they are proficient in one area, while they may struggle in others. Students are responsible for working in small groups with the teacher, as well as working independently at "workstations". The purpose of workstations is to mimic responsibilities that students might have out in the job world, such as organizing, sorting by category, and making change.

My Project

My students need software to go along with the Lego WeDo construction set in order to create the programming necessary to bring the lego creations to life. I believe that the use of the LEGO WeGo set will be a creative way to expose my students to a hands-on STEM curriculum. As a former technology teacher and current technology liaison, I am always looking for ingenious ways to incorporate STEM into my curriculum. I will assign each student job responsibilities and we will be working as a team. Two of my students have been working through the code.org curriculum and have a proficient grasp of block computer programming. They will be responsible for programming the computer for the WeGo. While looking at students strengths, I will assign other students to organize materials, and others will be building the physical project from LEGOs. Students on the autistic spectrum learn best when provided with concrete broken down step-by-step directions.

Through repetition of numerous activities using the LEGO WeGo, students will get a better understanding of what their responsibilities are within this team.

I believe this will be a great interactive method to teach students how to work together while understanding their individual responsibilities. Students will take pride in their roles and this process will allow them to generalize this knowledge to their eventual worksites once they graduate from school.
