My Project

Students enter the pre-kindergarten classroom with inquisitiveness to learn about their new environment. In that, it is crucial that the environment reflects some of the core foundational skills that they need in order to ensure future academic success. This can be done through the use of literacy games as well as hands-on activities that will encourage literacy development. Learning to read is critical to children's success, and the foundation of reading is laid in the preschool years. Research shows that the development of oral language skills, understanding of the alphabetic principle, and knowledge of print concepts are the greatest predictors of children’s future reading ability. When rich literacy environments are created, children have a greater chance of developing oral language skills as well as appropriate phonemic awareness skills.
