This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have an energetic, inquisitive and enthusiastic group of 26 five and six-year-olds in the inner city of Rhode Island. They are eager to learn to read and write and count to 100! My students are so appreciative of each other and all that we do every day. They are culturally diverse and enjoy sharing their own unique experiences with the class. We learn from each other every day. My school is working hard to build community among families and staff and we have a safe, respectful environment.

My Project

My students are at many different literacy levels and it is crucial that I provide specific tailored lessons to meet the needs of all. During reading center time I am primarily working with small groups of children so I can target individual needs and meet students at their zone of proximity. I don’t ever want to teach above or below the child’s level so I constantly assess and reflect on the lessons and activities I present. I believe this set of phonics instant learning centers would be extremely beneficial to have and use on a daily basis in our classroom. The children would be able to use the activities that are just right for them, at exactly their level of expertise, to gain literacy independence both in small group with me or on their own while practicing a specific skill. The skills addressed are crucial to becoming an independent reader and include prefixes and suffixes, 2-syllable words, blends and diagraphs, final e, vowel teams and short vowels.
