This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want my students to understand that they have control over their lives. They have many choices about what to put in their bodies. If they have a chance to learn how to grow their own fresh food rather than just going to the store to buy processed foods. I want to start a garden project with their Kindergarten buddies in that would provide learning and lasting memories.

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, I see my students dealing with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.

They need to learn that choices like expensive processed and packaged foods can lead to poor health as well as obesity.

Despite the many challenges that they are dealing with , I am looking to ignite self determination and satisfaction by growing their own food which will provide my students with project based science learning and meaningful experiences.

My Project

My students and their Kindergarten buddies will assist each other in learning about different ways to garden and creating a garden. The vertical garden box will show student's that they do not need a lot of space to maintain a garden yet they will also have traditional garden boxes. The students will also learn that soil is not a necessity when they interact with the hydroponics kit.

Students will plan and plant a traditional ,vertical and hydroponic garden.

They will then work together to observe, make predictions, care for the garden and harvest the garden. Each step in this process is invaluable knowledge to these students.

After the harvest, my students and their Kindergarten buddies will enjoy the fruits, vegetables and herbs of their labor. They will beam with pride at their accomplishment. Hopefully other grade levels will be able to enjoy the harvest as well. It will be a wonderful time for older students and younger students to connect and engage in project based learning.
