Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Explorers are upward bound learners who come from diverse learning backgrounds. Our classroom is based in a Title I school located in an underserved community in the heart of South Los Angeles. Most of our student population comes from a low socioeconomic background.

Despite their socioeconomic challenges, my students are always motivated to learn because of their desire to succeed.

These enthused learners enjoy working in small learning groups who learn best when they are given the opportunity to share and build on each others' knowledge and ideas. Working cooperatively continues to be their gateway to success.

Most of their success is a result of enrichment activities in which they are able to practice their communication skills. Because my classroom is mainly populated by English Learners, language enrichment is a high priority. Along with these enrichment activities, my learners enjoy friendly math challenges, team building activities and competitive sports.

My Project

My students need positive sports experiences to promote wellness. They need to develop physical skills that will allow them to throw, catch and dribble a ball without hesitation.

My students live in unsafe neighborhoods where sports and recreation is limited to a school's playground.

Sports participation begins to decline in upper elementary when children, girls in particular, develop a sense of insecurity in their physical skills.

I hope to create a positive sports environment with a wide variety of playground equipment. With multiple balls, I will be able to teach specific skills and have students actively playing all at once.
