Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all new residents of the United States, and they have many skills to learn to get ready for life after high school. We teach English in context so that our students receive a well-rounded education while they learn the target language, including afterschool activities.

My students are immigrants from around the world who have lived in the United States for four years or less.

Over 95% of our students receive free school lunch. My school believes in "meeting students where they are" in their education, and so they learn in their content classes by using collaboration and multiple opportunities to practice what they learn. They participate in a variety of afterschool programs to extend their learning beyond the classroom, including homework help, native language clubs, art and theater, and student government.

My Project

Our student government has been a staple of our school since we opened four years ago. We meet frequently to discuss topics of interest to the student body, as well as to plan projects for our school community. Although our students do not matriculate with a great deal of financial means, they do arrive with a passion for making things better for their school and their neighborhood. Someday, they hope to expand their influence to the world outside. However, one component they feel is missing are tools to make their experience more typical of what other students may get. They want a podium to give campaign and state-of-the-school speeches, and a gavel to help manage weekly meetings.

Your gift well help make the students' experience complete.

They want to do their best at whatever they choose to do, and that applies to afterschool activities as well. With your gift, they can express themselves properly to their fellow classmates and the school community at large. They will be able to practice parliamentary procedure using the proper tools. This will help make the students feel good about themselves, and help make our school community stronger.
