My students have different abilities and cultural backgrounds as English Language Learners with special needs. They practice daily functional and vocational daily living skills in the classroom to allow them to live a life as independently as possible. They all share their rich cultural background and native languages in our learning environment, as they improve their English language skills.
My English Language Learners (ELL's) with special needs are working towards developing life skills to foster their self-esteem and independence both at home and in the community.
Despite the physical and cognitive challenges each student faces each day, my staff and I work to provide both hands-on opportunities to build their receptive and expressive English language skills and their ability to employ compensatory strategies. Since the students may have language barriers, classroom activities feature regular review and repetition of multi-faceted English language skills. As educators, we continually strive to provide interesting lessons that build on prior knowledge and student strengths. Our lessons can be delivered in an engaging and interesting fashion, in the form of fun-filled, relevant exercises that build critical life skills and provide experiences for our students to participate in a more age-appropriate, functional manner through food service activities.
My Project
My English language learners with special needs are learning vocational skills while also practicing their English language and vocabulary skills. Since they learn best through meaningful, hands-on experiences and manipulatives, we're sharpening their skills and their tools with the most universal language there is- food!
At school students work in a vocational, kitchen-based classroom, known as our school's "Bake Shop," where they practice their functional and daily living skills while baking, preparing, packaging, and delivering desserts.
My students engage in activities including: preparing ingredients, reading/following recipe sequences, measuring, time management, money management, counting, decorating, plating desserts, taking inventory and orders, vocabulary development, and practicing basic cleaning and hygiene skills. Students can benefit from having packaging supplies and other kitchen essentials to facilitate the delivery of their baked goods and dessert orders. They will be able to transport their orders with professionalism by using a brand new delivery cart. For students who are working on pre-vocational and pre-baking skills, they can engage in mock-baking activities and skills through hands-on play food manipulatives.
The funding for this project will go directly to the supplies and materials my students will use to continue running their Bake Shop program. Because their engagement in these Bake Shop tasks furthers both their English language skills and their functional skills, it enables my students to be as independent as possible.
