My students need a way to express themselves eloquently and intelligently. The Young Debaters Program will help them to learn basic civil rights, e.g. "Freedom of Speech"; as well as positive ways to win an argument.
We are a small school in New York City with a diverse population. Our students come from all parts of the world, and in a lot of cases, English is their second language. As a result, words can sometimes be misunderstood. However, the rich cultural experiences that we share together as a class are priceless.
We are constantly looking for ways to enrich our learning environment creating special projects that embrace all levels of scholastic ability and interests.
We especially love STEM activities like robotics, computer coding, and 3-D modeling, but in addition, we also enjoy exploring specialty topics, such as the fine arts, foreign languages, and the Debate Club. We try to make every day an exciting learning experience.
My Project
Mr. Celestin's workshops are designed to help students develop communication skills. Skills that are a necessity for every student. The students work through lessons - learning how to write persuasive essays, construct counter arguments and play Devil's Advocate. Each student has their own set of materials for case studies. Mr. Celestin will make several classroom visits to work with the students by highlighting different strategies.
The students will learn to become good citizens, while learning how to stand up for other people's rights.
At the end of the 20 week program, they will have the opportunity to compete with other schools at an event overseen by local lawyers and judges. A student may enter this program timid and shy, but they leave it with confidence and gusto. It truly is a life changing experience.
