My Students

Every year my students enjoy and vote for their favorite of the Virginia Reader's Choice books. Students shine after reading these brilliant stories! The library needs at least two of each title. So, even if the "sun is not sunny," every classroom will be brightened by these beautiful books!

We are a high poverty area and many of my students live in very challenging circumstances, with little or no access to educational materials at home.

They develop an appreciation very quickly of their school library and all that it offers them, including excellent books and technology. They soon love to read because of this easy access to a wide variety of books! As the librarian, I make sure to have titles that appeal to the interests of every child; for example, in our rural community many children are interested in farming, fishing, and hunting titles. They also enjoy cook books and craft books. It is so heart warming when I hear students say they love the library. Since the single most important academic skill any person needs to acquire is to be able to read, I consider it a calling to nurture my students' enjoyment of reading and appreciation of great literature each and every day!

My Project

The Virginia Reader's Choice titles are selected annually for their literary and artistic merit by a group of dedicated teachers and librarians in Virginia. These books are highly appealing to most children. They are read throughout our school in the spring and teachers generate many learning activities around them. I teach students about elections and voting, and then I hold a VRC election in the library. Students vote for their favorite title, just as many others are voting throughout the state. Soon after that, we learn which title was the favorite in the entire state. It is a large-scale collaborative learning experience!

Students throughout the school, which has a population of approximately 450, will have the opportunity to read in class and to borrow from the library each of these books during the spring of 2015.

In the past I have had to borrow the books from the public libraries in both our county and surrounding counties in order to have enough for students to read all of the stories and to participate in the statewide election. It would be so helpful to have multiple copies of these excellent titles!
